Smoke Signal by Dena Helling

ABOUT THE EXHIBIT
The series is called Smoke Signal for the use of timed smoke grenades but also as a striking play on words to draw attention to the not so obvious inspiration for the series. Throughout history, every culture has tried to enhance the beauty of women be it body modification, use of jewels, pigment enhancements, clothing and the like. The emphasis on female adornment, the evolution and the varying use of adorning pieces across every culture worldwide is fascinating; I was inspired by this concept in my travels. The series is an expression of freedom, rejecting the concept by depicting a nude female figure in a hyper-enhanced setting. The use of primary colors red and blue were used for visual impact, to depict balance but also since the primary figure for creation is, the woman.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Dena Helling was born in Berkeley, raised in Alameda and spent most of her adolescence in Oakland.

"I'm very much an East Bay girl but spent my college years in Honolulu. Being surrounded by diversity in the Bay and Hawaii, I'm very inspired by culture, and contrast (be it style, light, texture etc). Ive always been drawn to visual media with an emphasis on thoughtful design and handcrafted works as my mom, a self taught oil painter and crafts woman, hand crafted my own foundation and passion for the arts at a very young age. While most kids my age were watching TV, I was experimenting with anything and everything I could get my hands on. I'm a mixed media artist, painter, avid DIYer, baker (with a cupcake company called Creme de la Crumb! - I craft one of a kind fondant decor for cupcakes and small cakes locally.) I fell into photography in jr high when I was in journalism and honed my craft throughout the years dabbling in several concentrations. I recently rebranded myself from lifestyle to creative concept photography, cultivating my newest endeavor 'Designed To Conquer.' The name is an ode of perseverance and my daily mantra in design and life as we know it."

Ollin by Rosa De Anda & Lila Maes De Anda

ABOUT THE EXHIBIT
Ollin, a Nahuatl word for movement, are large-scale wings reborn from recycled lath discarded from San Francisco Victorian homes. This collection demonstrates our ability to re-fabricate the future from the now by gathering from the past. We selected each piece of lath, constructing organic patterns true to the grain of wood, to reclaim the seeds and propel them into flight.

ABOUT LILA ROSA STUDIOS
Lila Rosa Studios is a uniquely creative mother-daughter artist team based in San Francisco, California. For us, art is documentation of the human experience. It is the language we use to move through feelings relating to love, skin color, self-identification, environment, ethnicity, and economic privilege.

Much of our work is produced by re-fabrication old discarded refuse. Our intentional use of reclaimed materials mirrors our examination of cycles of birth, death, and transformation. Our creations are about embracing the flaws of each fragment and turning the imperfections into a beautiful whole that breathes new life.
